Abstract: By use of an improved liquid scintillation counting method, the specific $\alpha$-activity of Pu-239 has been determined to be 136400 $\pm$ 360 disintegrations •min$^{-1}$ $\mu$g$^{-1}$ , which corresponds to a half live of 24350 $\pm$ 63 years. The counting method employed has considerable advantagea over other methods for the precise determination of specific activities of $\alpha$-emitters. However, the possibilities to discriminate against $\beta/\gamma$-emitting impurities are limited.
